Besides family, writing, and teaching, Archaeology has always been an important part of Venner's life. His first 'digging' experiences began years before high school, however by college he was ready to formally learn how to dig with a trowel and dental pick.

Venner began by working digs in Utah and Arizona, and from there, worked sites in the California desert, as well as the Peruvian desert. He has also worked in the Kingdom of Jordan, plus, in Portugal, Spain, and in Belize.
